What's your AC doing?

Tap your symptom. We'll tell you what it usually is and what to do right now.

Symptom 1 of 7 Most common no-cool call

AC Blowing Warm or Hot Air

The system runs, the air just isn't cold.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

The system is running but the air from the vents isn't cold. The most common causes we see in Tulsa are low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor on the outdoor unit, or an outdoor unit that has stopped while the indoor fan keeps running.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Check the thermostat is on COOL, not FAN.
    • Check the outdoor unit.
    • Is the fan on top spinning?
    • If it isn't, turn the system off at the thermostat so the indoor coil doesn't freeze while you wait.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We test the capacitor, contactor and refrigerant charge on the spot. Capacitors and contactors are on the truck; most warm-air calls are fixed the same visit.

Fixed the same visit in most cases.

Symptom 2 of 7 Check the breaker first

AC Won't Turn On or Stopped Working

Nothing happens at all when you turn it on.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

No response at all usually means a tripped breaker, a tripped safety float switch from a clogged drain, a dead thermostat, or a blown low-voltage fuse. If it stopped in the middle of a hot afternoon, a tripped breaker or overheated outdoor unit is the first suspect.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Check the breaker panel.
    • If the AC breaker tripped, reset it once only.
    • If it trips again, leave it off and call.
    • Check the thermostat display and batteries.
    • Look for water in the pan under the indoor unit.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We find why it tripped instead of just resetting it. Fuses, float switches and thermostats are stocked on the truck.

We find why it tripped, not just reset it.

Symptom 3 of 7 Turn it off now

AC Frozen Up or Ice on the Lines

Ice on the copper line or the indoor coil.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

Ice on the copper line or the indoor coil means airflow is blocked or refrigerant is low. A clogged filter, a failed blower, or a refrigerant leak all cause it. Running it frozen can burn out the compressor.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Turn the system OFF at the thermostat and set the fan to ON to thaw the coil.
    • This takes 1 to 3 hours.
    • Change the filter if it's dirty.
    • Don't chip at the ice.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We find the cause of the freeze (filter, blower, or leak) so it doesn't come back tomorrow. If it's a leak we locate it, repair it and recharge to spec.

We fix the cause so it doesn't freeze again tomorrow.

Symptom 4 of 7 Don't touch the fan

AC Fan Not Spinning or No Air From the Vents

The outdoor fan is still, or nothing comes out of the vents.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

If the outdoor fan isn't turning, it's most often the capacitor or the fan motor. If the outdoor unit runs but nothing comes out of the vents, the indoor blower motor or its control board has stopped.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Turn the system off.
    • Don't try to start the outdoor fan by hand or with a stick.
    • It's live equipment.
    • Check the filter; a badly clogged filter can stop airflow completely.
  3. 3

    What we do today

Capacitors and most common fan motors are on the truck. A capacitor swap is usually done inside an hour of arrival.

A capacitor swap is usually done inside an hour of arrival.

Symptom 5 of 7 Don't wait on this one

Outdoor Unit Not Running, Humming or Clicking

The outdoor unit hums or clicks but won't start.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

A hum or a click with no start means the compressor or fan is trying to start and can't: a weak capacitor, a bad contactor, or a compressor that has seized. This is the one symptom where "wait and see" costs the most.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Turn the system off at the thermostat so the compressor stops trying to start.
    • Note whether it hums, clicks, or does nothing.
    • That helps us diagnose faster.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We test the start components first because they're the cheap fix. If it's the compressor itself, we tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes sense. We repair when we can.

Start components first. They're the cheap fix.

Symptom 6 of 7 Protect the floor

Water Leaking From the AC

Water around the indoor unit or in the pan.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

Almost always a clogged condensate drain line or a full drain pan. Occasionally a frozen coil that's now melting. Water near the indoor unit can damage drywall and flooring quickly.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Turn the system off.
    • Put a towel or shallow pan under the leak.
    • If you can see a float switch in the drain pan, don't force it down.
    • It shut the system off on purpose.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We clear and treat the drain line, check the pan and float switch, and get the system back on the same visit.

Drain cleared and system back on the same visit.

Symptom 7 of 7 Usually a repair, not a replacement

AC Runs Constantly But the House Won't Cool

It never shuts off and never reaches the set temperature.

  1. 1

    What it usually is

On a 100° Tulsa afternoon a healthy system can run most of the day. But if it never reaches the set temperature, it's usually low refrigerant, a dirty outdoor coil, a failing compressor, or a system that's undersized for the home.

  2. 2

    Do this right now

    • Close blinds on the sun side, keep doors open for airflow, and set the thermostat 2 degrees warmer instead of colder.
    • Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a hose if it's caked with cottonwood or dirt.
  3. 3

    What we do today

We measure the actual cooling the system is delivering and tell you why it isn't keeping up. Most of the time it's a repair, not a replacement, and we'll say so.

We measure what it's actually delivering and tell you why.
